Terms: DJ & Audio Jargon
- Gain - A source of volume for each individual input channel
- Master Level Control - Master volume control
- Booth - Volume control for in DJ booth monitors
- Cue - Controls the signal for cueing, preparing and setting up for your next song
- Cue Selector - This switch is used to select the signal between channels 1 and 2
- Fader - Controls the individual output level
- Cross Fader - Fades the overall mixer output between channels 1 and 2, or Left and Right
- Program Balance/Pan - Controls the Left/Right balance of the program input
- Program - The audio source that is heard in the main room
- Headphone Pan - This function allows you to monitor the cue levels as well as the Master output in your headphones
- Slip Matt’s - A thin piece of fabric that is positioned between the turntable and the record: the slip matt allows for easy movement of the records in cueing and scratching
- Phone Level - Adjusts the headphone levels
- Pitch Bend - Adjusting the pitch control sharply
- Tracking - Selecting the first note, or beat of the track and sequencing what beat or note to the beat pattern of the song that is in program
- Reset - Picking up the needle and starting the song from your desired position while cueing
- Source EQ Controls: High & Midrange adjust the high-tone and mid-tone of sound; Low adjusts the lower tone of sound
- Cartridge/Stylus/Needle - The cartridge is mounted to the head shell, which is attached to the tone arm of the turntable. The stylus or needle is attached to the cartridge, and is a crucial part of the cartridge as this is the part that rides on the record groove.
- Beat Matching - Sequencing both Song A and Song B by tempo, pitch, and beat patterning
- Scratching - Sampling a sound bite and sequencing it to the beat
- Downbeat - The first beat in a measure or bar
- (BPM) Beats Per Minute - The pace of music measured by the number of beats occurring in 60 seconds: the number of steady even pulses in music occurring in one minute, therefore defining the tempo of the song
- Sequencing - Creating a seamless flow of music: creating a sound landscape
- Brake - The effect of the audio when the Stop button on the turntable is activated
- Cut or Slam Mix - When you cross fade from Song A to Song B on the beat instantly
